Health Matters: Weight Loss Surgery

Dr. Mustafa Aman, Director of Bariatric surgery talked to 18 News about what the Guthrie Weight Loss Center has to offer.

“So, I think that most people are aware of the number of health conditions that go along with obesity,” said Dr. Aman.  “Conditions such as Type II Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea.”

Dr. Aman said a host of other medical conditions are either caused or worsened by access weight.

“A number of our patients also report the personal impacts of excess weight on their lifestyle,” said Dr. Aman.

Excess weight can limit a patient’s ability to do things with their children or grandchildren.  It can also cause people to feel winded and tired and doctors at Guthrie have found that these sorts of limitations can cause a patient to be impacted just as much on a personal level as they are on a medical one.

People who have tried to lose weight unsuccessfully for a long time might be eligible for weight loss surgery.

To qualify, Dr. Aman said that, to start, patients have to have a minimum weight criteria based on their body mass index or BMI.

“Patients with a body mass index greater than 40 or greater than 35 with obesity-related health problems would qualify,” said Dr. Aman.  “And all our patients would have to adopt a healthier lifestyle and exercise in order to qualify for surgery.”

There are several surgical options available for weight loss at the Guthrie Weight Loss Center.

As a fully accredited weight loss program, Guthrie offers laparoscopic, minimally invasive surgical options for the benefit of their patients.

Guthrie offers the three most commonly performed procedures: the gastric band, the sleeve gastrectomy, and the gastric bypass, as well as other procedures.

“During our one on one consultation, we’ll review your individual health history and make the determination as to which procedure would make the most sense for you,” said Dr. Aman.

Guthrie offers information seminars, available both in person and online, for people who want to learn more about the risks and benefits of different surgeries.
