BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WETM-TV) – Bob “Taz” Buchanan has been working for the fire department for thirty-five-years. He currently drives the fire and EMS trucks for the Big Flats Firestation.
Three years ago, Buchanan received news after a vacation that changed his life forever.
“They did a CT scan and found out that I have colon cancer,” Buchanan explained. “My doctor says for the wrest of my life I’ve got to do chemo.”
Buchanan’s insurance does not cover all of his medical bills, and they are starting to add up.
“We just got a bill yesterday” Buchanan looks at his fiance for confirmation. “Almost 30-thousand.”
In all, he says that he owes roughly fifty-thousand-dollars in debt. He’s making small payments every month, but it’s not making much of a dent.
His family is selling raffle tickets to raise money for his medical expenses. The tickets are $5 and the winner will receive corn hole boards and bags. They will be picking the winning ticket in December.
