YMCA announces 2018-2019 Shawn Hogan Scholarship Winners

The Hornell Area Family is excited to announce the first recipients of the Shawn Hogan YMCA scholarship. The Shawn Hogan Scholarship Fund awards one-year memberships to selected youth in recognition of their demonstrated community service and volunteerism. Youth leaders between the ages of 8 and 19 who have voluntarily participated on projects that promote social responsibility in their communities are eligible. Local youth were nominated by adult leaders within area schools, youth organizations, and churches. The YMCA’s Board of Directors reviewed applications and selected the following award recipients:

 
Anika Henry-Smith is a Senior at Hornell High School. She has volunteered for the Hornell Area Concern for Youth helping with dishes after meals, doing activities with the younger youth and writing two youth grants for the organization. Anika served as President of the Boy Scouts Venture Crew conducting services including a blood drive and child abuse prevention activities. She has been President of the Spanish Club helping with many of their activities.
 
James T. Davies is a Freshmen at Hornell High School. James is very active at Christ Church in Hornell. His service at the church includes working as an Acolyte and volunteering to assist the elderly parishioners during church functions. James also helps to serve those in need through the church’s outreach programs. James is a very active Boy Scout and believes strongly in his commitment to the scout oath.
