About 90 law enforcement officers spent Tuesday afternoon at the Hilltop Inn for a “Complete Traffic Stop” education course.
The Chemung County and the New York State Police stop DWI programs brought in Sheriff Mike Lewis from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Department in Maryland for the lecture.
The retired sergeant and 22 year veteran of the Maryland State Police talked about the signs of driving while impaired and driving in possession of narcotics.
He said this lecture is especially important in New York State: a hotbed of criminal activity.
“New York City has about 8.4 million people and you can imagine how much drugs it takes to satisfy the appetite of New York City residents,” Sheriff Lewis said.
“Everybody’s trying to get shipments of drugs into New York and get shipments out of New York.”
Sheriff Lewis explained how to properly search a vehicle and check for hidden compartments.
