ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Forensic dentist, Dr. Bob Lyons stopped by the 18 news studio and talked about his impact on 9/11 history.

Dr. Lyons helped to identify many fallen victims after the September 11 terror attack.

The Chief Medical Examiner of New York City, Dr. Charles Hirsch got in contact with his wife and the next day had him sent to New York City. He was put up in an apartment where he would stay for the next month. During the month he identified the remains at ground zero.

Emotions in the city were running high and for Dr. Lyons it was stop at where the towers had collapsed that made it real for him.

“They stopped first down at the actual site where the towers had collapsed and it was then seeing just carnage that you cant even imagine,” Dr. Lyons said, “and I said take me back to the morgue I need to get to work, this is going to be a nightmare.”

One thing he remembered was how the police officers and firefighters were treated with admiration. Dr. Lyons said they were brought into the morgue by their own ambulance and escorted by NYPD motorcycles.

One victim that he talked about was a firefighter that was brought to him with only the uniform and a helmet with the number three on it. All that remained was the top of the victim’s skull and they had to use mitochondrial DNA that was ultimately used to identify him.
