Mountain Day at Elmira College

Local News

ELMIRA, N.Y. – After two nights of the students chanting, Dr. Lindsay announced today was officially “Mountain Day.”

During Mountain day, daytime classes are canceled. Students and employees enjoyed a relaxed day of fun, food and activities, such as lawn games, “bucking” pumpkins, and sumo wrestling.

They also hiked from Elmira College to Quarry Farm as done in the earlier years of the tradition.

The Alumni Service of Remembrance held in the Peterson Chapel honored alumni who have passed since the last Mountain day. After the service, members of the Class of 2020 planted irises outside Cowles Hall as part of the ceremony.

The 101-year old tradition started back in October of 1918. In the beginning students, faculty and administrators had a picnic and then hiked to Quarry Farm on Easy Hill.
