An inmate at the Steuben County Jail is facing new charges after allegedly using another person’s food stamps card.

James Smith, 33, allegedly made four separate transactions totaling $34.06 in July 2018. The card belonged to someone who was incarcerated in the Stuben County Jail.

Smith has been charged with four counts of Misuse of Food Stamps, a class A misdemeanor. The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office did not report the reasoning behind Smith being incarcerated prior to the additional charges.

Smith was issued an appearance ticket to appear in the Village of Bath Court at a later date.

The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit, and the District Attorney’s Office.
