ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) -The Twin Tiers Sports Awards returned on June 27, at Elmira High School. Horseheads Beverage Center in Horseheads and Allstate Brautigan Insurance at The Arnot Mall provided tickets for the event for just $5. The event was in its third year and it honored the very best in local sports.
People across the Twin Tiers voted for the team of the year, MVP’s, moment of the year and more by voting on mytwintiers.com/sports.

Marty Chalk – Lifetime Achievement Award Winner
For over 50 years, Marty Chalk has been a fixture on the local sports scene. A community leader and driven worker, Chalk has helped thousands in the Twin Tiers grow and become better in their respective fields. In 1966, Chalk served as the sports director at WELM Radio in Elmira entertaining sports fans from around the region. In the same era, Chalk was the public address announcer and official scorer for the Elmira Pioneers at Dunn Field announcing some of the greatest players in the game.
Chalk also did play-by-play for Cornell University football in 1970 and 1971, when games were watched throughout the northeast on the Teleprompter TV Cable System. In 1993, Chalk served as the public address announcer for the Elmira-Corning All Sports Basketball Tournament, which is now the Josh Palmer Basketball Classic.
A member of the Elmira/Corning All Sports Committee, Chalk was also president several times, starting in 1987. Currently, Chalk is the president of the Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame. He also serves as the president of the Elmira Civil War Prison Camp and president of St. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery. Chalk is also an elected member of the Chemung County Legislature and is starting his second term.
Marty Chalk is as kind as he is passionate. Our region has greatly benefited from his generosity and will to make every endeavor he’s worked with special. The Twin Tiers Sports Awards honors the great Marty Chalk for his outstanding contributions to local sports and the community with our prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
