Michael Garay joined WETM 18 News in September 2018 as a general assignment reporter and weekend web and newscast producer.
Prior to Elmira, Michael was a News Assistant for Spectrum NY1 in Manhattan, New York. As a news assistant, he shot b-roll, conducted interviews, reported on relevant information back to the station of news events, assisted reporters with gathering b-roll, interviews, live shots, and live events.
Michael graduated Cum Laude from Saint Francis College with a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media: Film, Broadcasting and Journalism and Brooklyn College with a M.F.A. degree in Television Production. While in college, he worked as a sideline reporter for the Terrier Sports Network covering St. Francis athletics, wrote for SFCToday, the student newspaper, and was a member of the College’s Honors Program. In graduate school, he was the director, producer, and cinematographer for a live day-long symposium and completed his thesis film, Rebound, a documentary on St. Francis men’s basketball.
He previously worked with MLB Network and interned with both CBS Sports and CBS Local.
Michael spends most of his free time at the gym or just getting out and exploring. He loves to travel and play sports, specifically baseball.
As a Brooklyn native, Michael has always enjoyed the great outdoors and simply exploring.
He is excited to call Elmira home.
