SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – A Pennsylvania woman was killed, a Massachusetts man was injured and an East Tennessee man killed himself in what is believed to be a random shooting at the sprawling Tanger outlet mall Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting was reported around 3:49 p.m. outside the Coach store at Tanger Outlets.

The gunman, Leon Steven Jones, 21, of Newport/Sevierville, Tenn., shot two people with a semi-automatic handgun and then shot himself, said Bob Stahlke of the Sevierville Police Department.

Jones and Olivia Katelyn Cunningham, 24, of York, Pa.,  died. John Marr, 75, of Templeton, Mass., was taken to UT Medical Center for treatment and was later released

None of the three people involved knew each other, according to Stahlke, and it is believed to be a “random shooting.”

“We do not believe that any of the people involved knew each other from everything we have so far and I’ll stress that this is so far, it’s still preliminary,” a Sevierville police spokesperson said. “It appears this is a random shooting. We don’t believe the shooter knew either victim. We do not know his motivation at this point as to why he came here and did this.”

Tanger Outlets said in a Facebook post the stores would close at 6 p.m. to allow investigators to work.

“We are grateful to the Sevierville Police for their quick response to the sad and tragic situation that occurred on our property on Tuesday. We closed our stores at 6 p.m. tonight to allow the investigators to do their work. We plan to reopen tomorrow at normal time,” management said.
