Elmira Mayor Dan Mandell declared April 26, 2019, Elmira Enforcers Day ahead of the team’s pivotal game three of the Commissioner’s Cup finals.
Only in their inaugural season, the Enforcers clinched a spot in the finals with a sweep of the Watertown Wolves, but are fighting off elimination Friday night against the Carolina Thunderbirds.
Elmira will be without starting goaltender Troy Passingham, captain Ahmed Mahfouz, and head coach Brent Clarke, who were each suspended after last week’s loss in Carolina.
Owner Robbie Nichols will be behind the bench in place of Clarke, who has been suspended multiple times this season.
Passingham, who played in a team-high 53 games, was involved in an altercation with a fan after being splashed in the face with a beverage following the loss.
Backup goaltender Nick Niedert will get the start for Elmira, making his 18th appearance of the season. Niedert is 7-2 with a .907 save percentage and a 3.44 goals against average for Elmira.
The Enforcers have won 19 home games this season, and need one more to see another day.
