ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) Stuffing your child’s backpack with the supplies they need for the year is one thing, another on the mind should be their physical safety. Carrying all that weight on their backs can actually hurt them.
No more than 20 percent of their body weight should be carried at one time, you also want to advise your child to use both straps. This will force your child to stand straight up and not lean to one side.
How the bag is packed can also cause pain. The heaviest of items like books should be placed closest to their back lighter items like notebooks and pencils to the front.
Try to go through your child’s backpack to make sure they’re not being overloaded. If need be a bigger backpack may help if you need to have a lot of books.
