Leading up to Tuesday’s election, City of Corning residents had a chance to see their mayoral candidates debate the issues facing their area.
Residents gathered at the second floor of Carey’s brewhouse for the event.
It was the final forum for the mayoral hopefuls and the final chance for constituents to hear what the candidates can bring to the area.
Among a list of topics of discussion, business development throughout the city rose to the front.
“We could improve and have code enforcement proactively talking to business owners as they’re improving their properties or moving into new business so you’re aware of what the rules are before you make that investment and then it’s a positive, proactive outreach instead of a negative outreach,” Republican Mayoral Candidate, Nick Weinstein said.
“That’s something that can be, should be looked at periodically to make sure we’re with the times and do right by business owners that are trying to do work,” Democratic Mayoral Candidate, Bill Boland.”
“I also worked with the predecessor to the Gaffer District for quite a long time and so I’m very much aware of the problems that businesses have starting out,” Independent Mayoral Candidate Elizabeth Whitehouse said.
Taxes was also a hot issue up for debate.
“That’s where we’ve got to have an honest conversation,” Weinstein said. “We’ve got to take a look at the services we’re offering here in the City of Corning and try to figure out how we can offer them more efficiently and how we can tackle them going forward.”
“As they say, ‘a penny saved is a penny earned,'” Whitehouse said. “So, if you got your income from somewhere else or you’re not paying out as much then the taxes are somewhat less of a problem.”
“One thing we’ve been successful at and currently pursuing, is taking properties that have been off the tax rolls and putting them back on the tax rolls,” Boland said.
Other topics included Thursday’s debate were renewable energy, involvement in the community and the city’s infrastructure.
