Catholic Charities spreads awareness of abuse

The First Step Victim Services Department of Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler Counties hosted an awareness initiative for No More Week.

No More Week is a national campaign held the first week of March aimed at making domestic violence and sexual assault awareness and prevention a priority year round.

They want people to feel comfortable to report and share stories and offer support when needed.

“One in seven men will become a victim of domestic violence and one in four women will become a domestic violence victim,” Kristine Morseman, a supervisor of victim services, said. “It is a widespread problem and it has always been in the shadows, and we hope to bring that to light.”

The Poor People’s Campaign of Elmira held a bystander training Tuesday night in Elmira. They reviewed the way people should respond to victims when they open up about an issue pertaining to this abuse.
