Chemung County department of Mental Hygiene recognizes suicide prevention week

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Shannon Oakes, prevention coordinator for the Chemung County department of Mental Hygiene stopped by 18 News Today to discuss suicide prevention week.

National suicide prevention day is recognized every year on September 10. Suicide prevention week this year is September 8 through the 14. To commemorate the occasion, the Chemung County department will be holding a series of events to promote resources and spread awareness around suicide prevention.

On September 11, the committee will be planting fresh mums at “HOPE Garden” at Eldridge Park. Thursday, September 12, the “Power of One” walk will be held at the Integrated Finger Lakes VA Health Care System in Bath starting at 10:30 a.m.

Friday, September 13, there will be a SafeTALK Training. It’s a three hour gatekeeper prevention class from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Human Resource Center, located at 425 Pennsylvania Ave. This event is free and open to public but does require pre-registration by email: soakes@chemungcountyny.gov
