Chemung County’s twelfth legislative district will see a new name on the ballot.
His name is Peter Keenan, a long-time resident from Elmira’s Southside. He said the 2016 elections inspired him to run for office.
Legislator Paul Collins currently represents that district.
Keenan has held various human-services jobs, ranging from job-teaching skills for the disabled, child abuse cases and helping inmates reintegrate into society.
He said those skills will help him if elected legislator.
“They’ve taught me that you need to sit down and keep your mouth shut and listen to what people have to say,” Keenan said. “If you listen to what people have to say, they’re going to tell you what they need and then your job is to help them make that happen.”
Some of the issues on his list he wants to address: poverty, health, the opioid epidemic and the environment. Jobs are also on his list, saying the county could benefit from renewable-energy sector jobs.
