“I received word that one of our council members, Mark Hitchcock, was pulled over for DWI last night,” Elmira Mayor, Dan Mandell said.
It happened around 6:30 Monday evening on East Washington Avenue and Lake Street on the way to the City Council budget meeting.
Officers arrested Hitchcock for driving while intoxicated and other traffic violations.
“He needs to make better decisions if, in fact, this all comes out in the wash. Right now, he’s been charged with DWI. Not convicted of a DWI,” Mandell said.
City Manager, Kim Middaugh, released this statement today: “Mr. Hitchcock must work through the judicial system and be treated the same as any other citizen. This matter was handled professionally by the police and now is scheduled to be heard in Elmira City Court.”
When 18 News reached out to Hitchcock himself, he had no comment other than he’s working with his lawyers today.
Neighbors in the City of Elmira say they’re frustrated someone handling their taxpayer money at a budget meeting would try to show up impaired.
“You’re handling our money now and I think it’s wrong,” neighbor Michele Stedge said.
“If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime,” neighbor David Siskin said.
The future of Mr. Hitchcock’s political career is unclear at this time.
“I have to meet with him. I will be meeting with the City Manager and the rest of our staff and go from there. I have a talk with Mark,” Mandell said.
Hitchcock is due in court on February 17.
