History isn’t always pretty, but it is always important.
“We need to have it right,” said Bruce Whitmarsh. “Otherwise it gets forgotten, it gets glossed over.”
Whitmarsh is a board member with “Friends of Elmira Civil War Prison Camp”, an organization hoping to restore a vital part of our region’s past.
“We’ve been trying to for more than three years to get reconstructed a building we believe is from the original civil war camp,” said Whitmarsh.
On Wednesday, comes the first true sign of progress for doing just that.
A ground breaking ceremony celebrates the occasion.
“It’s been a pile of rubble for a long time and it’s nice to see good things are happening and we’re making progress,” said Whitmarsh. “This building is going to be reconstructed and we’re looking forward to having it here to share with the community.”
Construction will begin this summer. Organizers hope to have the building finished by next spring.
