Clear the Shelters: Pets find new homes in the Twin Tiers

The nation is celebrating a special day – Clear the Shelters!

18 News is proud to partner with NBC to get as many shelter animals forever homes as possible.

Dozens of shelters in the area are waiving or discounting fees as part of the one-day adoption event.

Residents flocked to the Chemung County SPCA Humane Society looking for a furry friend to take home.

The Clear the Shelters event hopes to empty cages by waiving adoption fees.

Executive Director of the shelter Tom Geroy tells 18 News around 30 animals were adopted so far.

Most of the dogs at the shelter found forever homes but there’s still a lot of kittens up for adoption.

“I’m actually surprised at the number of kittens we still have, I thought that they would go very quickly we still have about 20 kittens up for adoption so I would encourage folks to come out here and scoop them up while they can,” said Geroy.

Officials say a total of 72 pets were adopted in the Twin Tiers Saturday.
