CNY police recruits undergo firearms training

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — In a time when active shootings are increasing across the country, firearms and reality-based training are now paramount for the class of newest police recruits in Central New York.

NewsChannel 9 got to see the training in action at the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Firearms Academy in Cicero. They are gaining the skills they will need when the call goes out about an active shooter.

“What we’re seeing today with the mass casualty situations in and across the United States is, these officers don’t only have to be able to pull a trigger, they’ll have to be able to think while they’re doing it,” said Deputy Matt Carey.

There are 50 recruits in the class and this is just one aspect of the necessary training on their journey to becoming Central New York’s newest police officers.
