Friday, December 14, 2018 would have been Ernie Davis’ 79th birthday.

The community is beginning to celebrate Davis’ special day on Thursday.

From noon to 5 p.m., the public is invited to celebrate the legendary Elmira native by enjoying catering from CFJB Bistro at the Ernie Davis Community Center.

The meal will cost just $4.44, in honor of Davis’ football jersey – #44.

Davis tragically passed away from leukemia in 1963, at just 24 years old. He was the first African-American to receive the Heisman Trophy in 1961, after playing college football at Syracuse University. He was the first pick in the 1962 NFL draft, but never got to officially play.
