Corning Parade of Lights kicks off the holiday season

The Corning Stationary Parade of Lights was damped a bit by the weather, but you couldn’t tell by the faces of the children in attendance.

The event featured a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, who arrived on a horse-drawn carriage. Dozens of children had an opportunity to meet the big man and tell him what they wanted for Christmas.

The tree lighting ceremony took an awkward turn when after the big countdown the tree didn’t light. Event organizers blamed the rain for the malfunction.

While the event featured stationary floats this year, Gaffer District Executive Director Coleen Fabrizi says they hope to make the event a moving parade in the future if they can solve security issues. Fabrizi said last year too many bystanders ended up on the street in the way of the moving floats and vehicles.

The fireworks display scheduled for Saturday evening was postponed to next Saturday during Sparkle.
