Cuse Juice throws some citrus shade at SU with last-hurrah State Fair slushie

NEW YORK STATE FAIR (WSYR-TV) — Before Cuse Juice is only a memory to its drinkers’ taste buds, the orange-flavored liqueur will be featured in a drink at the New York State Fair.

Daniella’s Event Center, formerly known as the Empire Room, will serve the Cuse Juice Slushie using the last of its batches. The drink will also feature Ryze Vodka, also distilled by Lock 1.

Lock 1 Distilling Company was ordered to stop production of the liqueur by Syracuse University, which threatened legal action against the company for using the word “Cuse.”

While they’re not able to afford the fight, the distillers feel they could win a legal battle since their use of Cuse doesn’t include the apostrophe. SU’s trademark is for ‘Cuse – with the apostrophe.

A spokesperson for Syracuse University defends its lawyers’ actions, which upset many of the school’s fans and supporters.

More than 5,000 people have signed a petition asking SU to reconsider, but the distillers are moving on.

The remaining bottles of Cuse Juice will be available for sale at the State Fair, in addition to the slushie being served at the Empire Room.

Co-owner Stephen Dates tells NewsChannel 9:

We felt it was very important that we bring Cuse Juice back to the NY State Fair where it made it’s debut one- year ago. It’s an important milestone for us, and for a product that has a lot of fans. We will be selling bottles of Cuse Juice, and Lock 1 Merchandise in several locations, including the Horticulture Bldg and The Eatery  during the run of the Fair. People want to see us and show us their support and we are looking forward to meeting and thanking each and every one of them.  We also have a BIG announcement we’ll be making about a new product and we will be releasing that statement on August 27th at the Fairgrounds.  It’s something we are all looking forward to.”
