The Southern Tier Diabetes Coalition held their annual fair at the Arnot Mall on Saturday.
Guests had the opportunity to get a few tests done and they were able to learn more information about diabetes and pre-diabetes. Officials from the coalition said millions are diagnosed with diabetes every year, and that the most successful treatment starts early.
“In New York State actually over 1 million people are diagnosed with diabetes every year,” Community Health Services Manager Nykole Parks said. “And more than that, or a little bit less than that I should say, are walking around that don’t even know they have diabetes. We know now that to ward off any complications long term is to start diabetes care or prevention activities before diabetes actually sets in.”
Flu shots were also available at the fair, it is recommended that anyone who has been diagnosed with diabetes gets a flu shot.
