Dollar General Corporation is opening 975 new locations across the United States for the 2019 fiscal year, one of of those locations is in Beaver Dams.
The new Southern Tier store will be an addition to the 470 current locations across New York State.
Neighbors who live next door to the up and coming store said they are disappointed in the new location. They feel the privacy of their family will be compromised by the high traffic the new Dollar General could bring.
Other residents in a neighboring community felt excited about the convenience the store could offer.
“Now we don’t have to go all the way to Corning to buy anything, we can buy a loaf of bread or cereal here,” Patricia Iddings, a resident of Beaver Dams for 59 years, said.
Another Beaver Dams resident, Courtney Williams, said she is also looking forward to the new store.
“I like the fact that it’s coming because if I have to rush to get milk or bread I could just go right down the road to get it instead of driving all the way to Walmart,” Williams said.
As the corporation expands, so is their construction. Some workers came all the way from Alabama to build a fence around the Beaver Dams store.
“We just mainly subcontract off a builder out of Alabama that does work with Dollar General Corporate,” Cody McKee, a construction worker from Huntsville, Alabama, said. “We finished up with Cohocton yesterday and then drove up here last night, had a little vehicle issue, but we fixed it and now we’re here to do another one and move along the trail.”
McKee said he has worked on nearly 40 locations with his team so far this year across the East Coast.
This, however, is just the beginning for him as he continues his trail up towards Buffalo before heading back to Alabama.
Dollar General said they will hire up to 10 new employees at the Beaver Dams location. The corporation plans on hosting a grand opening for the store later this summer.
