The streets of downtown Elmira are punctuated by parking meters on both sides of the road.
Now these specific new parking meters have been in place for about a month or so and weve already heard quite a few testimonials on how easy or hard they meters are to use. So I decided to get out and talk to the community about how they feel the meters will affect the parking in the down town area.
Senior engineering technician, Jacob Coles with the department of public work for the city of Elmira says that the meters aren’t there so much as to create a revenue stream. They are meant to encourage rotation and a higher turn over for short term customer parking in front of local business. Also when you are using those meters don’t get discouraged if your coins get stuck or your meter is unresponsive. It may just mean that that certain meter is full but not to worry because the new meters send a message to the dpw (department of public works) and techs will come out to empty it.
