Dozens gathered in Horseheads to discuss plans for a construction project decades in the making.

The Chemung County Department of Public Works held a public information meeting about the connector road between Route 13 and the Horseheads Sand and Transload Terminal or HOST Terminal. Representatives from the county, state and design team were there to show plans, answer questions, and gather feedback.

“The trucks to get to the HOST facility may have to end up using old Ithaca Road, Wygant Road and they’re going by a lot of houses,” Chemung County Department of Public Works Commissioner Andy Avery said. “And that’s not necessarily fair to the residents that for years this facility was abandoned. Well now there’s a lot of business happening, a lot of trucks and we want to make sure we can do the right thing plus provide an alternative access around Hanover Square so that’s maybe not as congested at times. It’s just giving people choices and trying to make it safer.”

Residents voiced concerns about the use of roundabouts in the project, proper signage alerting drivers that they’re coming up on a roundabout. Officials said if all goes according to schedule the road should be complete by 2021.
