The Elmira City Council approved a bid to finish construction for the North Main St. roundabout in Elmira.
The roundabout is planned for the intersection of North Main and Third Streets and Park Place. Back in April, the city postponed construction because bids came in too high.
The $4.6 million contact will come from federal funding. City Manager, Mike Collins, said the project has received some backlash because nearby businesses fear this will take away parking.
Collins, however, said the current set up is not safe for pedestrians.
“You have people coming from St.Patrick’s apartments and there is no safe place for them to walk,” Collins said. “It will be designed for the flow of traffic but also for pedestrian safety.”
Collins said it will also be a nice connector for Elmira College and Downtown Elmira. Construction is supposed to start back up in the Spring, and completed by Fall 2019.
