In the City of Elmira, residents are reminded there is a ban on open burning.

In the City, residents are permitted to having a chimney type burning pit, but can only burn charcoal or natural gas.

Elmira Fire Chief Joe Martino says every town and municipality has its own laws for their reasons, but the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation also has a say in what can and cannot be burned.
