The Elmira Police Department is looking to purchase body cameras for its officers.
The department is seeking authorization from the Elmira City Council to apply for a grant to help cover half of the cost of the new technology. EPD Chief Kane says the cameras will help better protect his officers and the community members they interact with.
“We want to hold our officers accountable for inappropriate conduct but also protect our officers from inaccurate claims of police mistreatment,” Kane said.
The grant is through the United States Department of Justice, and if approved, the city would be responsible for covering half of the cost. Chief Kane says there is already about $30,000 in the police budget set aside for this purpose.
