Elmira resident still adamant on preserving 162-year-old tree

The City of Elmira is looking forward to Elmira College’s new medical school, but some are still not happy about the sacrifices.

Last night, we told you about some residents concerned of an old beech tree’s fate.

The tree stands at Arnot Park where the school is going to be built.

Mark Delgrasso brought attention to the 162-year-old tree said he is happy to see a medical school coming to Elmira, but not at the expense of the tree.

“I’ve had a lot of suggestions, getting hold of arborists and landscaping historians and so on and I just don’t know if I have the resources to do that,” Delgrasso said. “I don’t know whether or not the college is aware of it. The City Council is aware of it, but whether the college is, I don’t know.”

Delgrosso said he reached out to the President of Elmira College and is continuing efforts to save the tree.
