FOLLOW UP REPORT: What’s to blame for Elmira Correctional Facility unrest

News

ELMIRA, N.Y. – After the Elmira Correctional Facility was placed on lockdown earlier this week amidst fights breaking out between inmates, a statement was provided from the Corrections Officers Union NYSCOPBA.

According to Western Region Business Agent of NYSCOPBA Al Mothershed, action needs to be put in place.

“I just think that it’s imperative that the legislators pay attention,” said Mothershed. “I think the legislators need to get down here, its easy to sit behind a desk and make these decisions. They need to come down here. They need to see, first off they need to see what an SHU is, they’re all thinking that its some archaic thing they watched on TV and that’s not the case. They need to walk down these facilities and see that its not what they think it is. We’re not beating these guys up day to day, we’re getting assaulted trying to protect them. They need to help protect us,” Mothershed added.

We will continue to provide the latest updates as more information becomes available.
