The upstate airport initiative is a $200 million competition in which five upstate New York airports will win and split that money in order to make changes for the better.
The Twin Tiers is a growing area and is really becoming a popular tourist destination. With Elmira Corning Regional Airport being a gateway into our region, it’s important to accommodate for the growing population.
“In 2015, we just completed a master plan that went through a whole study of what we expect our growth to be over the next 20 years, and what improvements we would have to do to the airport in order to accommodate that,” said Director of Aviation at the Elmira Corning Regional Airport Ann Crook.
If you’re a frequent traveler, you can be really excited about the Governor’s Upstate Airport Initiative. So, what changes would you like to be seen done at your local airport?
“When you have two hour layovers it would be really nice to have somewhere that you can relax and sit down and be able to take a break between flights,” said traveler Timberly Wilkinson.
“Checking in is very important,” said traveler Gary Snyder. “The quicker you can get through that and get through the security, the better you are.”
“Restaurants that offer healthy options, that is really hard to find,” said traveler Jan Corcoran.
Some more changes that would be made to our local airport include an expanded gate lobby, more gates being available, a bigger parking area, and more .
“I think that this is timely to not only improve the airport for everything that we’re doing right now, but to really position us to help the tourism economy grow in the Finger Lakes region,” said Crook.
