The Wellsboro Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 35th annual “Dickens of a Christmas” on Friday, Nov. 30 – Saturday, Dec. 1 on Main St. and surrounding side streets.

In 1983 a group of townspeople got together and tried to come up with a way to celebrate the holiday season. While struggling to come up with an idea, one person said  “I don’t know what we should do but, whatever we do, we ought to have a Dickens of a good time doing it!”

Since then the event has grown from hosting 7-12 vendors to over 40 in the 35 years the event has been held on Main St. in Wellsboro. Some of the original vendors included home-made Gouda cheese, popcorn, and apples from an orchard in Ely Hill.

The original gatherings didn’t include street closures, forcing participants and vendors to dodge cars and trucks. Nowadays the entire street is closed to allow safe and easy passage for visitors.
