ELMIRA N.Y (WETM)-The big maple leaf auction in Hornell is turning 7 this year!

During the fall season the city of Hornell’s arts community center sets aside pieces of wood in the shape of maple leaves and sends them out to local student artist to decorate as they wish. The decorated leaves are then auctioned off at the Hornell Maple Leaf Auction.

The opening bid for the leaves in the auction is 20 dollars. Half of the proceeds go to the Hornell Arts council and the other half goes to the artist. we spoke with Amy Mikolajczyk about just how this auction came to be.

“We saw a similar type of fundraiser in another organization and we’re known as the maple city. And so we thought why not use the maple leaf to kind of represent the Hornell area.”

The big maple leaf fall auction is this weekend on Main Street and Broad Way Mall in Hornell. There will be food, games, vendors and so much more fun for the whole family as we kick off the fall season.
