The Park Church in Elmira is collecting donations for those protesting the pipeline in North Dakota.
Officials said the protesters are in need of supplies to help them through the winter, like sub-zero tents and sleeping bags. Church members said they want to support the effort, even if they are halfway across the country.
“These are our brothers and sisters and their treaties have been broken since the beginning they’re being broken again and they’re trying to protect their land, ” project coordinator Doug Couchon said. “We think that’s a social justice issue that’s worth pursuing and we want to support them.”
