The New York State Legislature passed a law requiring gun owners to keep firearms in a locked cabinet or equipped with a trigger-locking device if someone under the age of 16 is in the home.
The Assembly and Senate passed the legislation Monday, five weeks after lawmakers approved a package of other gun control measures.
This latest measure makes it a misdemeanor to fail to securely store a rifle, shotgun or any other firearms.
One gun store in Corning said it’s all practical judgment.
“Most people that have guns do have them locked up, it is common sense, use common sense,” Vivian Woodworth of Louie’s Gun Shop said.
Woodworth also said local gun owners she spoke to tend to have more issues with the New York Red Flag Law, rather than this measure.
Those who voted against the measure say it is an infringement on the Second Amendment right to bear arms.
