An Ithaca City Police Chief is credited with saving a man’s life.

Robert Gelinas Jr., age 54 of Ithaca and Jenna Swertfager, age 24 of Dryden were involved in a car crash on state route 13.

Police Chief Pete Tyler was the first to arrive on the scene Thursday of the two-car crash.

He immediately noticed Galinas bleeding from his head and was not breathing, Tyler began life-saving measures until emergency responders arrived.

Galinas was then rushed to the Ithaca Airport where he was flown by Lifenet to Upstate Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

Upon investigation, Galinas was suspected of failing to yield to the right of way to Swertfager and he was not wearing his seatbelt.
