Campers are coming in from all over the country to celebrate NASCAR race weekend at Watkins Glen International.
“We come up every year for the races,” Camper Jeff Fish from Goshen, Mass. said. “Actually we came up early this year, we came up on Saturday and just visited the area. My family is from Corning, so we’re very familiar with the area, we started to make this a family tradition probably about five or six years ago.”
Almost of the campers we talked to said they’ve made camping at WGI a tradition. It’s something they look forward to year after year.
“We’re big race fans and we come every year,” Mary Jo Bowley, a camper from Johnsonburg, Pa. said. “We’ve been coming, Pink and Dave and I have been coming for about the last 15 years and my husband’s been coming since like 1971.”
So what is it about race weekend at WGI that keeps people coming back year after year?
“Just the atmosphere up here,” Camper John Thompson from Corning said. “You know, everybody is so nice, from out of town and in town we see, and it’s just a great time.”
“The racing part of it and it’s a beautiful area, and and it’s three hours from home and it’s easy to get to, and just be up here for the hype of the race,” Kim Bowley, a camper from Johnsonburg, Pa. said.
Almost all the campsites at the Glen are sold out for this race weekend, come Sunday the campgrounds will be completely full of race fans.
