Cars left unattended while warming them up is illegal. 

West Elmira Police explained that you have to be keep a close eye on your vehicle.

“The illegal part of warming up your car is the part when you put keys in the ignition, start it, leave it unattended with keys in the ignition, then it can be stolen,” said West Elmira Police Chief Peter Michalko.

Michalko went on to say that with the winter weather upon us, people should be locking their cars when they leave. He recommended locking up your vehicle and having a spare set on hand.
