With the next winter storm bearing down on the Twin Tiers, officials across Chemung County are making preperations.
The City of Elmira Fire Department has a few tips for residents to stay safe, including ensuring your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are functioning properly. Fire Marshall Richard Keyes also reminds residents that are using generators to keep them away from garages or areas away from windows to make sure carbon monoxide doesn’t build up in the house. He also says the main type of emergency call they get during winter storms is related to overexertion due to shoveling snow, so take care of yourself and know your limits while shoveling your property.
The Chemung County Public Works Department is also busy with preparations. Salt is being laid across the county, and the larger pieces of equipment have been prepped in order to combat the potentially high snowfall amounts. Chemung County Public Works Commissioner Andrew Avery says that he is confident the county is prepared to handle the storm.
