Chemung County Sheriff’s Office body cameras under scrutiny after NYPD recall

x (Do not use) Local News - -

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office is keeping a close eye on body cameras worn by sheriff’s deputies.

The New York City Police Department recalled more than 3,000 Vie Vu LE 5 body cameras last weekend. One of those cameras started ti smoke while an officer was wearing it. The officer took the camera off before it exploded.

This is the same make and model worn by Chemung County Sheriff’s deputies.

The sheriff’s office has been in contact with the New York State Sheriff’s Association to see if other departments are having issues.

Right now, deputies will still wear the cameras.

“Currently right now, we have not recalled them,” William Schrom, the Chemung County Undersheriff, said. “We’re keeping them in service, but our personnel are aware of the issue that occurred so should they notice any problems, obviously they’ll act accordingly.”

He said more of these cameras were ordered for school resources officers.

If there is an issue, Schrom said he believes the manufacturer will replace the cameras at no additional cost.
