Local leaders are reaching out to a consultant to study a possible consolidated effort with police services
The Elmira City Manager, Elmira Police Chief, Chemung County Executive and Chemung County Sheriff had preliminary discussions on it Wednesday.
The consultant would look at the overall police picture in the county including cost estimates, structure of a consolidated effort, call volume and coverage.
County Executive Tom Santulli stresses there are no preconceived ideas going into this.
Santulli said, “We don’t know the structure of this. We’re not there yet. This is just a preliminary discussion to talk about the feasibility, knowing the city, especially in 2017, is going to have more financial problems. We need to preserve police services in this county and that’s what we’re doing.”
Elmira City Council and Chemung County Legislature approval would be needed for hiring the consultant and the door remains open to other municipalities to get involved.
Santulli says he’ll try to get state funding to pay for the study.
