Day Trippin’: Bradford County Historical Society

Local News
Towanda, Pa. (18 NEWS) – A former home to inmates now houses the 145 years of history of one Pennsylvania county.

For this week’s Day Trippin’ we head to the Northern Tier for a history lesson on prison life and home life of people living in Towanda and the surrounding areas.

If you want to know what jail life was like once upon a time the Bradford County Historical Society may just be the place for you. Simply put back in the day it wasn’t the nicest place in the county, by no means a pent house, not much room for activities.

“No lights, dirt floors, rats, and stuff. Kids are like ‘Ew how can you live like that. How can you put a prisoner in there’,” said the tour guide at the museum, Heather Palmer.

Now inmates transferred to the new prison, dirt floors swept up, the 1871 building now houses a museum of the history of Bradford County.

“All our exhibits represents the different things that happened throughout the years through the county,” said Henry Farley.

There is something for everyone to enjoy at the former Bradford County Jail. A little bit of the Revolutionary War, a piece of the first ever Boy scout Troop, and farm tools used by our local farmers.

“Unique collection, great collection that goes back to the beginnings of the county. Always good, people are wanting things to come here. Great things to put on display.”

For guest like this family we caught day trippin’ to the museum it provides a history lesson for the young and old all while capturing a snap shot of the past. After all, its the clothing, tools, and machinery our elders used many many moons ago. Just a place to remind our neighbors in the Northern Tier about the importance their chapter plays in the Pennsylvania history books.

“This place is a great representative of Bradford County. Kind of a melting pot County.”

The jail is located at 109 Pine Street in the center of Towanda’s Historic District.
