HAMMONDSPORT, N.Y. (18 NEWS) – A rapidly dwindling population of locally-built wooden boats is the inspiration for one summertime hot spot in the Southern Tier.

For this week’s Day Trippin’ we set sail to the Finger Lakes Boating Museum.  A museum to help preserve the boating heritage of the Finger Lakes Region of New York State.

Inside this stone building covered in vines over a hundred handmade local boats cover the floor.

“All different style of boats, canoes, inboard, outboards, anything that floated on the lakes we have here, most built here in the Finger Lakes Region,” said the Executive Director Andrew Tompkins.

The Finger Lakes Boating Museum, a fairly new exhibit, highlights boats made by locals from across the region.

“We highlight all the boating heritage and boating building of the Finger Lakes which is quickly becoming a hidden history.”

In the early 1800’s and 1900’s boat building was a huge industry for the area. Slowly those businesses began to leave the area, leaving only a few left.  This museum hopes to keep their legacy alive. Beside refurbished boats the museum has an active boat work shop.

“Right now we have a 39 launch, called the Pat II that used to serve as the the US mail boat on Skaneateles Lake.”

What makes the Finger Lakes Boating Museum even more unique is it is housed at the former Taylor Wine location.

“There’s a place for everyone up here and then you can go downstairs and see the actual tasting room that was part of Taylor Wine history,” said Kathleen Gaffeny.

Taylor Wine is the oldest winery in the Finer Lakes Region. At the museum it is almost like a museum within a museum.

“Surprising for everyone, go down think they are going to look at boats, send them down, gonna be blown away. See these huge barrels and wow really was part of the area, really was a tasting room and it hasn’t changed since the 80’s when this place was a winery.”

In just over a year, the Finger Lakes Boating Museum has made great strides in creating a space to learn, enjoy and step back in time. As they approach their anniversary of the grand opening, FLBM is inviting all to celebrate and help  grow as the next chapter begins!

September 26th will be the anniversary celebration.
