Elmira native Rob Toonkel ran his 400th marathon on his 44th birthday.
It was a day that he will never forget.
“I was not an athlete in high school,”said Toonkel. “I was the complete non-athlete. I lost thirty five pounds freshman year in college, decided to keep it off. Started running then, picked up marathons because my father did the New York marathon. Then it became a way to see the nation,” added Toonkel.
In total Toonkel has ran more than 270 courses, won nearly 80 pounds worth of medals, and collected 410 race t-shirts all while wearing 40 different hats.
Toonkel went on to say, “any athletic pursuit is more about what you give back than what you achieve.”
