Friends and family help continue burn victim’s journey to recovery

Jay Brown just returned home a little under 2 weeks ago after spending 41 days in the hospital recovering from severe burns.

He was involved in an accident where sparks fell onto a black powder on the floor of his garage igniting, and causing a small explosion, leaving him with 3rd degree burns on over 50 percent of his body. He spent over a month in a coma.

His wife Chrissy has been his rock during this tough time. “For better for worse, you do what you gotta do and I wouldn’t be anywhere else.” she says.

This is not the first time Jay and Chrissy have put those vows to the test. Just 3 years ago, Jay was there for Chrissy when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Chrissy says “He was always taking care of me and just supporting me. We just have a strong relationship and we’re gonna make it.”

Jay is a correctional officer in the city of Elmira and has lived here his whole life. A benefit was held in Jay’s honor to raise money for medical expenses and anything else Jay will need as he heals.

Friends, family and other correctional officers from around the state all attended to show their support for Jay and his family.

The accident has left Jay blind, but that didn’t take away his spirit. He was all smiles at the event and grateful for the support and love.
