The Horseheads School District is warning parents of a new internet challenge known as the “Momo challenge” that encourages children to harm themselves.
Superintendent Dr. Thomas J. Douglas emailed a letter to parents warning them of the “challenge” that has resurfaced online.
Dr. Douglas is asking parents to talk to their children and to make sure they aren’t consuming these violent videos.
The ‘Momo challenge” features a disturbing character in a video who asks children to perform dangerous tasks and to send back pictures of it or else the character will harm them itself.
The videos are hidden within seemingly harmless videos and games kids can find online, and companies such as Youtube are stepping up to eliminate the content on their platforms.
“We want to clear something up regarding the Momo Challenge: We’ve seen no recent evidence of videos promoting the Momo Challenge on YouTube. Videos encouraging harmful and dangerous challenges are against our policies. If you see videos including harmful or dangerous challenges on YouTube, we encourage you to flag them to us immediately. These challenges are clearly against our Community Guidelines.”
