A city of Syracuse judge has approved a request that a man accused of murdering his 21-month-old daughter receive a mental health evaluation.

Ryan Lawrence did not appear in city court on Monday, but his defense attorney Mike Vavonese requested a mental evaluation for the 24-year-old man.

Lawrence is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Maddox Lawrence, whose body was found last week at Syracuse’s Inner Harbor.

Last Wednesday, Lawrence pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The 24-year-old was also denied bail.

Court documents indicate that baby Maddox was killed between 4 and 10 p.m. – about 90 minutes before police say they were alerted that the father and child were missing.

According to Onondaga County District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick, the child was killed in the Labrador Hollow area in Cortland County.

Vavonese waived a preliminary hearing.

Lawrence’s next appearance will be in Onondaga County Court.

District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick said he will prosecute the case himself.
