A local veterans club is at risk of shutting down and is asking the public’s help to stay afloat.

Elmira’s Italian American Veterans Club is experiencing dwindling membership.

The club has been around since the 1950s, providing the community a place for people to gather and hold ceremonies such as weddings, wakes and dinners.

The club’s manager says its relying on younger people to be new members.

“We don’t want to see it close, like I said, it’s a very small community that we have here,” Gino Dunn, the club’s manager, said. “We’d like to get some new members. I know other clubs, even fire departments are having a hard time getting members.”

Dunn also adds that membership is open to anyone, regardless whether or not someone is of Italian heritage.

Membership is $25 a year and includes perks such as a discounted hall reservation price.

Membership information can be obtained by calling the IAVC at (607) 732-5377.
